The best fire is the one that never starts.

A few simple habits save lives and property every year. Here are the essentials.

Free Smoke Alarm Program

District residents can call (618) 588-3890 to request a smoke alarm test and battery replacement.

1

Smoke Alarms, Every Level

Install alarms on every level of your home, inside every bedroom, and outside every sleeping area. Test monthly. Replace any alarm older than 10 years.

2

Two Ways Out

Every room should have two escape routes — usually a door and a window. Pick an outside meeting place, practice twice a year, and never go back inside.

3

Never Leave Cooking

Unattended cooking is the #1 cause of home fires. If you must leave the kitchen, turn the burner off. It takes seconds.

4

Smother a Grease Fire

If a pan catches fire, slide a lid over it and turn off the burner. Never use water on a grease fire — it can create a fireball.

5

Space Heater Safety

Keep anything flammable at least three feet away. Plug directly into the wall — never into an extension cord. Turn off when you leave the room.

6

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Illinois law requires CO alarms within 15 feet of every sleeping room in homes with fuel-burning appliances. CO is invisible — an alarm is the only way to detect it.
